An Introduction

Hello and welcome to the home of the Shirley A. Stopplemoor Stroke Foundation.

BACKGROUND

Formed in 1992 to help expand the University of Iowa medical community’s understanding of stroke, particularly among children and young adults, the Shirley A. Stoppelmoor Stroke Research Fund has been a success story. With a track record of positive outcomes, including development of a visiting lecture series at the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine and the design of clinical trials to test treatments for stroke in children, the Shirley A. Stoppelmoor Stroke Research Fund recognizes the need to prepare for growth and an increased capacity at this time in the organization’s development.

OPPORTUNITY

The Shirley A. Stoppelmoor Stroke Research Fund is at an interesting crossroads in their organizational development, having made significant strides to date with a modest endowment of $132,000. While the organization’s short term goal is to build upon the success of the symposiums for the lecture series, the longer term goal is to accelerate the size of the Fund so that a Chair / Professor in Neurology (Vascular Neurology / stroke) can be endowed at the University of Iowa on an expedited basis. Ultimately, funds from the chair would be utilized to support research activities of the named professor. While it is expected that the Fund will grow over time to $300,000 through regular contributions, the Fund’s trustees would like to accelerate the size of the fund by raising an additional $750,000 by 2010.
